What Is a MagSafe Case?
A MagSafe case is a phone case with a ring of magnets built into its back, positioned to line up with the magnets inside the iPhone. Chargers, mounts, wallets and stands snap into place on their own, and wireless charging passes through the case — you never take it off.
How MagSafe works
Apple introduced MagSafe with the iPhone 12 in 2020: a ring of magnets around the wireless charging coil, plus a smaller magnet that tells the phone which accessory has just been attached. A MagSafe case carries the same ring, in the same place, so the magnetic field passes through the case instead of being blocked by it.
Held by the magnets, the charger lands in the right place every time.
Three things follow from that ring:
- Alignment. The charger finds its position by itself, every time. Wireless charging fails more often from a coil a few millimetres off centre than from a weak charger.
- Speed. An Apple MagSafe charger delivers up to 15 W, and up to 25 W on the most recent iPhones with the matching adapter. A plain Qi pad stays around 7.5 W.
- Accessories. Wallets, car mounts, stands, battery packs and tripods hold on the back of the phone without a clip and without a frame.
Does MagSafe work through a case?
Yes. Magnets and wireless charging both pass through leather, and through the thin shell underneath it. Three things do get in the way: a metal plate added by another mount, a case much thicker than 3 mm, and a card left between the phone and the charger. Leather is not one of them — a leather MagSafe case charges and holds exactly like a bare phone.
Do you need a MagSafe case?
Only if you use magnetic accessories — but that is the whole point. Without a ring in the case, a MagSafe charger placed on a covered iPhone will not hold: it slides, and depending on the case it may not charge at all. The phone’s own magnets are not strong enough to reach through an ordinary case.
Stands, mounts and chargers hold by the ring alone — no clip, no frame.
The reverse matters more than it sounds: on a phone without magnets, the case is what supplies them. Apple has built MagSafe into every iPhone since the 12, with one exception — the iPhone 16e, which has neither MagSafe nor Qi2. Fit it with a case carrying a magnetic ring and the accessories work, on a phone that cannot do it alone.

What is a MagSafe case for Samsung?
MagSafe is Apple’s. The open equivalent is Qi2, and Galaxy phones — the S25 and S26 included — charge wirelessly without carrying the magnets in the body: the ring comes from the case. That is why a “MagSafe case for Samsung” is not a contradiction. It gives a Galaxy the magnetic behaviour an iPhone has natively, and the same chargers, mounts and wallets then work on both. Leather MagSafe cases at Marcel Robert
Marcel Robert cases have carried the magnetic ring inside the shell, under the leather, since the iPhone 13. It sits there rather than behind the leather so the case stays thin: around 1 mm of soft shell and 1 mm of full-grain calfskin from French and Italian tanneries, shaped by hand by the Marcel Robert artisans. Inside, a stitched Italian Alcantara® microfibre wipes the screen every time the case closes. Cases for the iPhone 12 and earlier were made before we adopted the ring, and do not have it.
