iPhone Duo Leather Cases

Apple's first foldable iPhone introduces a new format — and a new approach to designing a leather case.

With a 5.4-inch outer display when closed and a 7.6-inch inner display when opened, iPhone Duo changes both the way the device is handled and the way it needs to be protected.

Marcel Robert is currently developing leather cases specifically for Apple iPhone Duo.

Our first prototypes are now being studied and refined, with particular attention to the folding mechanism, protection, everyday handling and the overall thickness of the case.

The final designs are still in development.

A new iPhone format requires a new kind of case

Unlike a conventional iPhone, iPhone Duo is built around two connected sections and a precision hinge.

Closed, it can be used one-handed through its 5.4-inch outer display. Opened, its 7.6-inch inner display creates a much larger surface for viewing content, working across apps and everyday use.

For a leather case, this changes the design considerably.

Protection can no longer be considered around a single rigid body. The case has to follow the movement of the device while leaving the folding mechanism free to operate naturally.

That is where our development work begins.

Designing a leather case for iPhone Duo

Our objective is not simply to adapt an existing iPhone case to a different shape. We are developing the iPhone Duo case around the particular architecture of the device.

Movement

The case must accompany repeated opening and closing without restricting the natural movement of iPhone Duo.

The hinge

Protection around the folding area requires particular attention. The hinge must remain free to move while exposed areas of the device are protected as effectively as possible.

Thickness

Adding leather and protective construction to a folding device can quickly create unnecessary bulk. Keeping the finished case as thin as possible is therefore one of our priorities.

Everyday handling

The two displays, cameras and controls must remain easily accessible whether iPhone Duo is being used open or closed.

Leather and construction

The structure has to combine the natural properties of leather with the mechanical requirements of a device that changes shape throughout the day.

These are development objectives. The construction and features of the final Marcel Robert iPhone Duo cases may evolve as prototypes are tested.
